## Which Vertical Traffic Panel Should I Buy?

For most buyers, the first decisions are **panel height, reflective sheeting and base weight**.

A 24-inch reflective panel can provide a compact channelizing device where that configuration is appropriate. A 36-inch panel provides a larger reflective target and greater overall device height. Heavier recycled-rubber bases provide additional mass at pavement level but also increase the amount of weight crews must move during deployment and retrieval.

For reflective performance, Boulevard Supply offers **High Intensity Prismatic (HIP)** and, where available, **Diamond Grade** configurations.

## What Are Vertical Traffic Panels?

Vertical traffic panels are portable channelizing devices that use a narrow upright panel with diagonal reflective striping mounted in a weighted base or support system.

You may also hear them called:

### Vertical Panel Channelizers

A common industry description emphasizing their use for channelizing and guiding vehicle movement.

### Vertical Traffic Barricades

A common purchasing term for portable striped panels used to identify temporary restrictions and work areas.

### Vertical Flat Panels

Another search term used to distinguish the narrow upright device from traffic cones, drums and larger barricades.

Unlike a traffic cone, the broad flat surface gives the device a large area for directional reflective striping. Unlike a conventional Type I or Type II barricade, its narrow footprint can make it useful where available roadway or work-space width is limited.

## Vertical Traffic Panel Applications

### Road Construction

Temporary lane guidance, construction zones, lane shifts and changing traffic patterns where a highly visible upright channelizing device is appropriate.

### Utility Work

Temporary work areas for electric, water, sewer, gas, telecommunications and other utility operations.

### Municipal Public Works

Street maintenance, pavement projects, temporary closures and other city or county traffic-control operations.

### Parking Facilities

Temporary vehicle routing, lane separation, closed areas and traffic guidance within large parking lots and controlled facilities.

### Construction Sites

Vehicle entrances, restricted areas, temporary routes and changing work zones around large commercial construction projects.

### Emergency & Maintenance Operations

Temporary traffic guidance when lanes, access points or vehicle routes must change because of maintenance or an incident.

## HIP vs. Diamond Grade Vertical Traffic Panels

| Reflective Sheeting | Boulevard Supply Positioning | Why Consider It |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------- | --------------- |
| **High Intensity Prismatic (HIP)** | Our standard reflective option | High-visibility prismatic reflective sheeting for professional traffic-control and work-zone applications |
| **Diamond Grade** | Premium reflective option where available | Consider when a project specification or operating environment calls for a premium reflective sheeting configuration |

Boulevard Supply does not assume that one sheeting type is correct for every project. Government contracts, DOT projects and engineered traffic-control plans may specify the required reflective material.

**Before ordering:** If your project specification identifies a particular reflective sheeting type, ASTM designation, state approval, QPL listing or other certification requirement, provide that information with your quote request so the correct configuration can be verified.

## Plasticade Vertical Traffic Panel Options

Plasticade's current traffic-safety catalog includes several vertical-panel designs. Rather than treating them as interchangeable, each has different dimensions, weights and base arrangements.

## Plasticade Verticade Vertical Panel

### Full-Size Vertical Panel with 12 x 36 Inch Reflective Area

The Plasticade **Verticade** is a substantial freestanding vertical panel designed around a 12 x 36-inch reflective panel. Plasticade lists the complete unit at approximately **21 inches wide by 43 inches high** with a listed weight of approximately **27 pounds**.

**Product:** Plasticade Verticade
**Model:** 4200-W-HIP
**Overall size:** Approx. 21"W x 43"H
**Reflective area:** 12"W x 36"H
**Sheeting:** High Intensity Prismatic
**Stripe width:** 6 inches
**Listed weight:** Approx. 27 lb
**Color:** White panel structure

The reflective sheeting is applied to a 4 mm corrugated plastic panel that is attached to the Verticade with plastic panel rivets.

Plasticade supplies the standard striped configuration with **left sheeting on one side and right sheeting on the opposite side unless another direction is specified**.

### Weighted Foot System

The Verticade uses two 36-inch feet. Plasticade specifies each foot with square rubber pads and an anti-skid pad, and the feet are filled with silica sand.

An optional **20-pound ballast boot** can be placed over a barricade foot when additional ballast is needed. The ballast boot also comes filled with silica sand.

Another useful maintenance feature is component interchangeability. Plasticade specifies that the Verticade feet, ballast boots and hardware components are interchangeable with its Safetycade barricade system.

## Plasticade Crosscade 36 Vertical Panel

### 12 x 36 Inch Vertical Panel with Separate Rubber Base

The **Crosscade 36** is a modular vertical panel that combines a lightweight upright with a separate recycled-rubber base.

**Panel:** 12"W x 36"H reflective area
**Panel dimensions:** Approx. 14.3"W x 50.5"H overall
**Panel weight:** Approx. 8 lb
**HIP model:** 4336-W-HIP
**Diamond Grade model:** 4336-W-DG
**Stripe width:** 6 inches
**Base options:** 28 or 43 lb recycled rubber
**Sheeting:** Both sides

This is one of the most versatile configurations on the page because buyers can select both the **reflective sheeting level and base weight**.

A 28-pound rubber base provides a substantial portable foundation. The optional 43-pound base adds another 15 pounds at pavement level for applications where a heavier base is desired.

### HIP or Diamond Grade

The Crosscade 36 is available with **High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade striped sheeting on both sides of the panel**.

This makes it particularly useful for buyers whose project specifications already identify the required reflective sheeting.

## 20, 28, 30 or 43-Pound Base: Which Should You Choose?

More base weight can provide additional resistance to movement, but heavier is not automatically better for every crew or application.

| Base Weight | Available With | Consideration |
| ----------- | -------------- | ------------- |
| **20 lb** | Gemstone | Lower handling weight where the 20-pound configuration is suitable for the application |
| **28 lb** | Crosscade 24 and 36 | Strong middle-ground base for professional portable vertical-panel systems |
| **30 lb** | Gemstone | Additional pavement-level mass while retaining the modular Gemstone design |
| **43 lb** | Crosscade 36 | Heaviest Crosscade option listed by Plasticade for buyers wanting additional base mass |

Consider crew handling, storage, exposure, vehicle turbulence, deployment duration and the requirements of the traffic-control plan when selecting base weight.

## Left vs. Right Vertical Panel Striping

### Stripe Direction Matters

Reflective diagonal striping is not simply decorative. The orientation of the stripes is part of the traffic-control message.

Plasticade defines **right striping** as a stripe beginning at the upper right and angling downward toward the left. **Left striping** begins at the upper left and angles downward toward the right.

Plasticade specifically warns that orders without a specified striping direction can be delayed while the manufacturer contacts the purchaser for clarification.

When requesting a quote, tell Boulevard Supply whether you need:

- Left striping
- Right striping
- A specific arrangement required by the traffic-control plan

Do not choose stripe direction based simply on which version looks better. The intended traffic movement and applicable traffic-control plan should determine the correct orientation.

## Why Choose a Vertical Panel Instead of a Traffic Cone?

| Vertical Traffic Panel | Traffic Cone |
| ---------------------- | ------------ |
| Large flat reflective target area | Conical reflective target |
| Directional diagonal striping | Horizontal reflective collars |
| Narrow upright profile | Wide tapered cone profile |
| Separate heavy rubber base available on modular models | Weighted base integrated with cone |
| Useful where directional striped guidance is desired | Excellent general-purpose temporary channelizing device |

Neither device is universally better. Traffic-control plans frequently use different channelizing devices according to roadway conditions, available space, required visibility and the nature of the temporary traffic pattern.

## Vertical Panels for Construction Companies

Vertical traffic panels are particularly useful on active construction projects because vehicle routes and work areas can change as the project progresses.

Potential construction applications include:

- Temporary construction entrances
- Lane shifts
- Delivery and truck routes
- Equipment access points
- Paving and concrete work
- Temporary restricted areas
- Utility installation
- Parking and staging areas
- Changing vehicle routes around large developments

For large projects, the ability to palletize panels and bases separately can also simplify transportation and storage compared with fully assembled devices.

## Vertical Traffic Panels for Municipal & Public Works Departments

Municipalities and public works departments can use vertical panels for street maintenance, pavement projects, utility repairs and other temporary traffic-control operations.

Plasticade also offers **stenciling and customized rubber bases**, which can help identify equipment belonging to a particular city, department, contractor or fleet.

For government projects, provide Boulevard Supply with any required QPL, APL, crash-test, reflective sheeting or certification requirements before the order is placed.

## Bulk Vertical Traffic Panel Orders

Vertical traffic panels are particularly well suited to contractor, municipal and commercial quantity purchases.

Plasticade's current catalog lists substantial pallet and truckload quantities, including:

- **Verticade:** 40 assembled units per listed pallet quantity
- **Crosscade 24 panels:** 84 panels per listed pallet quantity
- **Crosscade 36 panels:** 84 panels per listed pallet quantity
- **28 lb Crosscade bases:** 48 bases per listed pallet quantity
- **43 lb Crosscade bases:** 48 bases per listed pallet quantity
- **Gemstone panels:** 162 panels per listed pallet quantity
- **20 lb Gemstone bases:** 100 bases per listed pallet quantity
- **30 lb Gemstone bases:** 60 bases per listed pallet quantity

You do not necessarily need to purchase a full truckload. Contact Boulevard Supply with the quantity and destination so we can determine the most practical shipping configuration.

**Traffic-control compliance:** State agencies, municipalities and individual projects can have different requirements for traffic-control devices, reflective sheeting, crashworthiness, placement and approved-product listings. The purchaser or user is responsible for confirming that the selected device is appropriate for the specific application. Boulevard Supply can help obtain available manufacturer documentation when required.
