Stanchion Storage Carts and Transport Carts

Commercial stanchion storage carts make it easier to move, organize and protect retractable belt stanchions and post-and-rope stanchions. A properly selected cart can reduce setup time, improve employee handling and help prevent the scratches, dents and cassette damage that commonly occur when stanchions are carried or stacked individually.

Boulevard Supply offers commercial stanchion carts with capacities ranging from 12 to 24 posts. Available designs include compact horizontal carts, low-profile vertical flatbed carts and high-capacity horizontal tower carts.

The best design depends on how frequently your stanchions are moved, the number of posts being stored, available storage-room space and the amount of lifting employees can comfortably perform.

Our Preferred Design: 18-Post Vertical Flatbed Cart

For facilities that frequently move and deploy stanchions, Boulevard Supply generally recommends the 18-post vertical flatbed design.

Unlike a horizontal rack, the vertical flatbed allows each stanchion base to rest on the lower platform while the post remains upright. Employees lift the stanchion only a short distance before guiding it into position.

This lower loading method can reduce repetitive lifting and eliminate much of the sliding contact associated with horizontal storage racks. It is particularly beneficial for retractable belt stanchions because cassette tops, belt receivers and post finishes are less likely to strike the cart frame during loading.

The tradeoff is floor space. A vertical flatbed cart is longer than a tower cart and may not be suitable for narrow equipment rooms, confined service hallways or locations where compact storage is the primary concern.

Why Stanchions Are Often Damaged During Storage

Through years of supplying crowd-control equipment to hotels, casinos, venues and event operations, we have found that much of the visible wear on stanchions occurs while employees are loading, unloading and transporting them.

Retractable posts are relatively heavy, and their upper cassette components extend beyond the post body. When a stanchion is lifted into a horizontal rack, the receiver clip, belt end, cassette cap or post finish may strike the rack or another stanchion.

Using a cart does not eliminate the need for careful handling, but the right cart can:

  • Reduce unnecessary lifting and carrying
  • Keep stanchions organized during storage
  • Reduce contact between posts
  • Help protect powder-coated, polished and wrapped finishes
  • Reduce impacts to retractable belt cassettes and receivers
  • Make event setup and recovery more efficient
  • Prevent stanchions from being stacked loosely against walls

Choosing a Cart by Stanchion Inventory

Up to 12 Stanchions

A 12-post horizontal cart is generally the most practical choice for a small or moderate inventory. These carts are compact, easy to maneuver and require less storage space than an 18-post vertical flatbed.

A 12-post cart is a strong option for restaurants, theaters, schools, municipal buildings, smaller hotels and facilities that do not continuously move stanchions throughout the day.

13 to 18 Stanchions

The 18-post vertical flatbed cart is our preferred choice when stanchions are frequently deployed and returned to storage. Its low loading height provides better employee handling and helps protect post finishes and retractable belt components.

An 18-post horizontal tower cart is an alternative when the facility needs the same capacity but has limited storage-floor space.

19 to 24 Stanchions

Facilities with 19 to 24 stanchions can select a 21-post or 24-post tower cart when maximum capacity and compact storage are the priorities.

Another option is to use two smaller carts. Multiple carts may allow different departments, floors or event areas to maintain separate inventories and can be easier to maneuver than one fully loaded high-capacity cart.

More Than 24 Stanchions

Large hotels, convention centers, arenas, stadiums and event rental operations will usually require multiple carts. Consider how the stanchions are divided operationally instead of selecting carts based only on total inventory.

For example, separate carts may be assigned to entrances, ballrooms, security operations, event floors or individual storage rooms.

Vertical Flatbed vs. Horizontal Stanchion Carts

Cart Style Primary Advantages Primary Limitations Best Application
Vertical Flatbed Low loading height, less lifting, reduced contact with posts and retractable belt cassettes Requires more storage-floor space and a longer travel path Frequent setup, daily deployment and facilities prioritizing employee handling
12-Post Horizontal Cart Compact, maneuverable and practical for moderate inventories Lower total capacity and requires posts to be lifted into horizontal storage positions Smaller facilities and operations with up to 12 stanchions
Horizontal Tower Cart High capacity and efficient use of storage-floor space Requires higher lifting and may expose posts and cassette components to more contact Large inventories where compact storage is the primary concern

Measure Your Access Routes Before Ordering

Do not select a cart based only on its storage capacity. Measure every area through which the cart must pass, including:

  • Storage-room doorways
  • Service hallways
  • Elevator openings
  • Loading-area entrances
  • Tight hallway turns
  • Door handles and protruding hardware
  • Thresholds and floor transitions
  • The overall height and width of the cart when loaded

Loaded stanchions may extend beyond the published frame dimensions. Cart specifications can also change, so current overall and loaded dimensions should be confirmed before placing an order.

Employee Handling and Cart Safety

Stanchion carts are designed to make commercial equipment handling more efficient, but employees should still use care when loading and moving them.

  • Do not exceed the cart’s stated capacity
  • Distribute stanchions evenly
  • Engage locking casters when the cart is parked
  • Use caution on ramps, thresholds and uneven floors
  • Do not leave loaded carts unattended on sloped surfaces
  • Keep hands clear of wheels and pinch points
  • Inspect wheels, frames and padded surfaces periodically
  • Replace damaged wheels or hardware before returning the cart to service
  • Confirm that posts and bases are compatible with the selected cart

Frequently Asked Questions About Stanchion Carts

1. Which stanchion cart does Boulevard Supply recommend?

For facilities that frequently move stanchions, we generally recommend an 18-post vertical flatbed cart. The low loading height reduces lifting and helps prevent contact with post finishes and retractable belt components.

2. Why would I choose a horizontal tower cart?

A horizontal tower cart stores more stanchions within a relatively compact floor-space footprint. It may be the better choice when storage capacity is more important than low loading height.

3. Which cart is best for 12 or fewer stanchions?

A 12-post horizontal cart usually provides the best balance of compact storage, maneuverability and capacity for smaller inventories.

4. Do these carts hold retractable belt and post-and-rope stanchions?

Most models are designed for common retractable belt and post-and-rope stanchions. Compatibility depends on the post diameter, base diameter, base shape, cassette dimensions and overall design.

5. Will the carts fit 2-inch and 2.5-inch posts?

Several of the horizontal cart models are designed for common 2-inch and 2.5-inch posts. Compatibility should still be confirmed using the manufacturer and model of the stanchions being stored.

6. Which cart provides the greatest protection for stanchion finishes?

The vertical flatbed design generally provides the greatest protection because the posts remain upright and do not have to be repeatedly slid through horizontal rack openings.

7. Which stanchion cart is easiest for employees to load?

The 18-post vertical flatbed is generally the easiest to load because employees lift each stanchion only a short distance before placing the base on the cart platform.

8. Which cart has the highest capacity?

The Visiontron V-HPSC-24 holds up to 24 stanchions and provides the highest capacity among the models shown on this page.

9. Do stanchion carts arrive assembled?

Assembly requirements vary. Some carts require complete or partial assembly, while the Visiontron VPSC-18 flatbed cart is listed as arriving assembled. Confirm current requirements before ordering.

10. Will a loaded cart fit through a standard doorway?

Do not assume it will. The cart frame, loaded stanchion overhang, door handles and hallway turns can all affect clearance. Measure the complete route and request current loaded dimensions before ordering.

11. Can carts from one manufacturer hold another manufacturer’s stanchions?

Often they can, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Post diameter, base diameter, base shape and retractable cassette dimensions should be checked before selecting a cart.

12. Is one large cart better than two smaller carts?

Not always. One large cart maximizes capacity, while two smaller carts may be easier to maneuver and can be assigned to different departments, floors or event areas.
